Here is a page we thought would be a helpful tool to "navigate"

around the beautiful town of Rocky Point, Mexico.

Every now and then, you may find yourself off the main road

and onto a side street that you have never seen before.

It has happened to all of us at one time I imagine.

DON'T PANIC!!

YOUR STILL IN ROCKY POINT.

You just have to find your "bearings" again.

We hope this page may help you do just that!

Think of this as your "Personal Virtual Tour".

"My first trip to Rocky Point was at night, and I had no

idea where I was until the next morning." (Shea Peil)

Then things started to look familiar and I actually

knew where I was, and how easy it is to find my way around.

Let's start our trip in Ajo, Arizona.

Arizona Highway 85 is the main route to the Lukeville border,

once you are out of the Phoenix area.

From Tucson, you take Highway 86 until it

meets up with Az 85 in Why, Arizona.

 Arizona 85 runs right through Gila Bend, Ajo and Why.

We get our auto insurance at the Ajo Insurance Service.

The Ajo Insurance Service Office is located next

to the Chevron, on the main road, Az #85.

From Ajo, it's about 45 minutes to the Lukeville border.

The next town you pass through is Why, Arizona,

about 10 minutes after Ajo.

Now, if you are traveling from Tucson, you would take

State Route 86 to Why. Then take the Az 85 to the border.

Here is the border crossing at Lukeville, Arizona.

Rocky Point is 63 miles once you cross the border,

so fill up the gas tank and be on your way.

 These photos are from the Lukeville gas station,

looking at the Us/Mexico Border.

Photo on the left shows border crossing.

Photo on the right shows several stores,

including one store that sells Cologne, Perfume and Alcohol.

Here we are, heading back to the US.

If you get the Red Light at the border going into Mexico,

here is where you pull over.

If you get the Green light, you have passed customs.

Now, you are 63 miles from Rocky Point,

so please Drive Safe and have fun.

Once you cross the border, you are in Sonoita

(usually spelled incorrect: Sonoyta)

You want to follow the signs that say:

Peuerto Penasco or Pto. Penasco.

This is the Mexican name for Rocky Point.

The road that leads to Rocky Point is Mexico Highway #8. 

We took this photo (above) from up on a hill, next to a restaurant

called "Wendys". This was Thanksgiving Weekend 2005.

This photo shows us looking into Mexico.

This road will begin to slant to the right after a few minutes,

then you will see a Circle K on your right,

then up to the first stop sign. Turn left.

Soon after that, you pass over a small bridge,

then, the road begins to slant to the right again.

Right side has shops, taco vendors, ect.

Left side has a small, sunk-in park.

Follow the slant to the right; your now on Hwy #8.

Pit Stop: On your left is a store called Vasquez.

Vasquez has over 200 types of Tequila.

One of our favorites is the TeqiPal (probably spelled wrong),

which comes in Strawberry, Mango, Coco and Cafe.

All stocked up on supplies, so lets hit the road again.

Now, lets fast forward 62 miles to Rocky Point.

Now remember, you are still on Mexico Hwy #8.

This is the main road all the way to Rocky Point,

and it takes you all the way through town.

FACT

If you stay on Hwy #8 the entire time,

and do not turn left or right onto any street,

you will end up looping right back to where you started.

* Makes it hard to get lost, doesn't it *

Highway #8 is Benito Juarez Blvd once you enter Rocky Point.

For those of you who have a reservation at the beach front condos

Princesa, Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sea, Las Palmas, Bella Sirena,

Sonoran Sun, and the Casa Blanca Villas,

you want to look for this sign when you enter town.

Turn right at the light, then follow this road.

It is paved the entire way, so "no worries".

In fact, you will see a Circle K on your right, a few minutes

after you drive over the train tracks.

After the Circle K, you will continue driving for a few minutes,

then come to a place where the paved road meets

a dirt road, here at these Arches.

Now, go straight thru the arches to find the condos we mentioned earlier.

You can use this paved road to get back and forth to Benito Juarez Blvd.,

which you can take to town, if you so chose.

Now, back to Benito Juarez Blvd (BJB).

Here are 2 photos we took standing at Tacos Luis taco stand.

Tacos Luis is on the corner of Av. Costitucion, on the main road, BJB.

If you turned right (here) on Av. Constitucion,

it would take you to the grocery store called Super Ley.

You will pass the Hotel Paraiso del Desierto on the way.

Super Ley grocery is about a minute drive after pass the hotel.

Alright, back to the main road, BJB.

The next major street light you want to look for has a

pedestrian overpass, along with a bunch of the green

street signs, (like on a freeway, but smaller).

Each sign reflects the names & locations of many of the hotels in town.

If you turn right, you would drive over the train tracks.

Now, you are heading toward the Sandy Beach area.

This road is called Calle 13.

You can find a bunch of shops and taco stands on both sides of the road.

Calle 13 will take you to the Penasco Del Sol hotel, Pinacate condos,

and the Playa Bonita and Laos Mar hotel, on a separate road.

Here we are on Calle 13, looking back toward the main road

we just turned off, which was Hwy #8, BJB.

Here, we are standing across from Keno's Store on Calle 13.

Here we are looking at the Penasco Del Sol

(old Plaza Las Glorias)

Now, lets go back to Keno's store for a moment

(photo above this one).

On the corner where Keno's is located, you will notice a

dirt road that leads to one dock area and the Navy Yard.

This road will take you to Lobo Del Mar office (on your left).

Or, if you want to enjoy the Sunset Cruise on the Rey Del Mar,

continue driving passed Santioago's,  to the Rey Del Mar office.

It is right nest door to Balboas Restaurant.

On the other side of the street from Keno's,

you will notice a wooden sign that says:

To Playa Bonita and Laos Mar hotels.

This photo is looking back toward that corner with the sign,

right across from Keno's.

This dirt road will take you to the Playa Bonita and Laos Mar hotels.

Keep driving passed the Quad and Golf Cart rentals -

 until you get to the 4 way intersection. Turn left.

Now, after you turn left, follow this road for a minute

 as it will start to curve to the right, then it will take you to the left.

Soon after you pass this store (below)

Continue on this road to the security gate, then to the

Laos Mar (on the right), or the Playa Bonita (on your left, beach front)

Special Note: On the corner, where that small store is located,

their is a short dirt road that leads to a New Paved Road

that can take you all the way to the Beach front condos mentioned earlier.

Once on this dirt road, you would drive about 2 minutes

until you see the new paved road that connect you to the

beach front condos on Sandy Beach. Once you reach pavement, turn left.

This view is looking back toward the dirt road behind Laos Mar.

Las Palomas would be on the left.

This view is from Las Palomas, looking at the New Road.

You would pass Las Palomas first (on your left),

 and the Las Palomas Golf Links

(under construction, on the left & right)

This new road ends at the 2 lane paved road with all the large palm trees.

This is the road to the condos, after you passed thru the Arches.

If you take a left, it goes to the condos

Casa Blanca, Princesa, Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sea,

Las Palmas, Bella Sirena and the Sonoran Sun.

If you turn right, and stay on the paved road,

it takes you back to the main road, Hwy #8.

Then you would turn right to drive back to

town on Benito Juarez Blvd..

Now, back to the paved road, where these arches are located,

you will notice a connecting dirt road on both sides.

One direction (North-East) would take you to the Reef Club,

Cholla Bay and JJ's Cantina.

The other direction (South-West) would take you to Rodeo Drive,

and eventually back to town, depending on your route.

Here we are on the Cholla Bay road, as it's called,

looking back toward the arches (photo above)

Here are 2 photos taken on Rodeo Drive,

which is connected to the Cholla Bay rd.

These are some of the shops you pass along the way.

If you stay on this dirt road and go over the train tracks,

it will take you back to the main road, BJB.

Or, if you want to take a short cut, turn right at the

end of the shops, (just before the train tracks)

and this road will take you back to Calle 13.

It's dirt part of the way, then the rest is paved up to

the light on Calle 13.

You pass the "Whale House", as I call it, on your right.

This road is partially paved to the next stop sign now (June 2006)

Now, you are at the light on Calle 13.

You have 3 choices at this point.

Turn right to go back to the Penasco Del Sol & Pinacate.

Turn left to go back to Benito Juarez Blvd.

Or, you can go straight through the light and

connect with BJB, as it curves toward the

Fish and Shrimp Market on the Malecon.

The road, straight, is called Calle Luis Encinas (CLE).

This photo was taken on CLE, looking back toward Calle 13.

This photo is looking toward JBJ, right where the Anchor is.

The road to the left of the Anchor is where you would

be coming from on Calle Luis Encinas.

If you want to enjoy the Fish Market and Malecon,

turn right (left side of anchor)

Now, you are driving to the Fish Market and Malecon area.

On the way, you will pass a drive-thru liquor store on your left.

Here is the road you are on right now.

This road will also take you passed the Sun N Fun Dive Shop

(on the right side of the road)

Important Fact: After the Dive Shop, it becomes a 1-Way road.

On the right, you will find a bunch of Fishing Boat Captains

trying to fill their boats with fishermen.

If you want to do a bit of fishing that day, pull over and begin negotiations.

Now, this one way road is going to take you to the Fish and Shrimp

Market, located on the Malecon.

We will take you frame by frame right through the Malecon,

starting on the first corner you will see.

This is the corner where the Fish Market begins.

On the right is Porto Fino, an Italian Restaurant.

Next to Porto Fino, is Flavio's, which has a beautiful ocean view.

Across the street are the Shrimp Vendors selling some of the best

Shrimp, Fish and Clams you will ever eat (in Rocky Point).

After you pass Flavio's, their are Shops and Restaurants on both side.

Right Side: Senor Amigo's and Senor Shrimp II (upstairs, ocean view).

Left Side: Beto's Place, Shark Bite (upstairs), and Thrifty Ice Cream.

Across from the Thrifty Ice Cream is The Point Restaurant.

After you pass The Point, so begins the "Malecon" on the ocean side.

At the end of the street (above), it will curve to the left,

passing Vina Del Mar Hotel on your right.

This photo we took from Casa Del Capitan shows it best.

See how the road curves like a horse shoe,

taking you right past the Vina Del Mar.

Here is a road (below) called Paseo Victor Estrella (PVE),

just passed the Vina Del Mar.

Point of Interest: On this corner, where the Park is, their is a street

(going away from the Malecon)

that leads to the best coffee house in Rocky Point,

Santana's Coffee Casa.

Okay, back to Paseo Victor Estrella, by the park (photo above this one)

You will pass another Thrifty Ice Cream (left side) and a

beautiful Church, across from Thrifty.

Okay, your at the Church, driving down PVE.

Where to turn?

Here are the choices. If you kept going forward (no turn),

it connects with the BJB, just before the beginning of the Malecon.

You have to drive thru the Malecon again, and start over.

If you want to drive back to town,

you want to turn right on this corner, onto Ignacio Ruiz Blvd.

This road Ignacio Ruiz Blvd.,

 takes you up the hill, passing the Costa Brava Restaurant,

which is on your left.

Soon after Costa Brava, you will see the Friendly Dolphin Restaurant,

also on the left side (still on Ignacio Ruiz Blvd).

The Friendly Dolphin is, "HANDS DOWN",

one of the best restaurants in town.

Across the street from the Friendly Dolphin is one of the most

beautiful stores we found in Rocky Point.

It is called Mercedes Rustico.

Here is a photo from the top of the hill (by the Dolphin & Mercedes),

on Ignacio Ruiz Blvd.,

looking toward the Sun N Fun Dive Shop.

Remember, that is where the "One Way" street began?!.

Okay, lets head back to where the Anchor is on BJB.

The photo (below) shows the direction you would be driving.

If you want to drive to the Baja Hotel, Manny's Beach Club,

or the Rocky Beach area, you want to stay right on the road,

then turn right at the first opportunity.

Its a quick right, then right immediately.

The road you want to be on is Campeche Ave.

On your left is Pharmacy Hegar and Lolita's Restaurant.

After Hegar and Lolita's, you will see a few shops on the left.

On the right, is a Fresh Flower Store and Margarita Villa,

which we are told will reopen in early 2006!

Then you will see the Fiesta De Cortez hotel at the top of the hill.

Here is Campeche Ave, at the top, by the Fiesta De Cortez.

At the end of this road, you have 2 choices:

Turning right takes you to the Hotel Baja.

Turning left takes you down "The Strip",

which is on a street called Calle 1.

The Strip is the Rocky Beach area where you can find Manny's

Beach Club, Pink Cadillac and Pitahaya Bar.

Take a look at this photo from the hill

by the Casa Del Capitan.

Here is a look at the entrance to Manny's Beach Club, on Calle 1.

Here is Calle 1 looking back at Manny's and the Hotel Baja.

Soon you will see a stop sign.

If you turned right, you go to the Pitahaya Bar & Granada Del Mar hotel.

If you turned left, you can find 2 different hotels.

The road to the right is called Sinaloa Ave.

Plaza Penasco and Playa Inn are on Sinaloa Ave.

If you continue to drive past both hotels, you will see a store

on the right side called 8 to 12.

Okay, at the end of Sinaloa Ave is a stop sign.

"Right now, you are right below the Pemex sign."

Where to next?

The road you are facing is Freemont Blvd.

If you turn right, you will be heading toward Las Conchas,

the Oysters Farms and Caborca.

Okay, if you stayed on this road, and didn't turn right to Las Conchas,

you would be driving on the road to Caborca.

This does pass a dirt road turn off, on your right, which leads

to the Oyster Farms (about 10 minutes off the main road).

on the Caborca road.

Here is the sign they have to show you the turn off to the Farms.

Now, lets backtrack to this photo:

If you didn't want to go to Caborca or the Oyster Farms,

but wanted to see Las Conchas, Cedo or the Aquarium,

you would turn right onto the dirt road.

Here is the road from left to right, showing us driving

to the Aquarium.

At the end of the road (above), to the right, is the Aquarium.

Okay, lets look back to Sinaloa Ave, facing Fremont Blvd.

If you turned left at the stop sign, it will take you back

to the main road, Benito Juarez Blvd.

You will pass a 7-11 on your right, and the Black Dog Bar.

The Black Dog is a bar and restaurant, and they

have some great Ribs! Yummy!!

On your left, you would see the Fire Station and the old Police Station.

This is Fremont Blvd, which leads back to BJB.

If you turn right on BJB,

you are heading back toward the pedestrian overpass.

Old Jim Burr Plaza is on your right (with Giant Shrimp Sculpture),

then an electronic store.

On the left is one of the local schools, then you will

see a small shopping strip with a few store,

including Pharmacy Cosmos (Green Building).

When you reach the Train Tracks, their is a stop sign.

Remember: Stop before the tracks first, then at the stop sign.

Bonus: On the corner with the stop sign, they have a

great little fresh fruit stand. You should give it a try.

If you were to turn left at the light (still on Fremont Blvd.),

it will take you back to the Malecon, (passing the Anchor on the way).

Well, that's it! That is the "Virtual Tour" of Rocky Point,

taking you around on the main roads people use to get around.

The short cuts are available for saving some time

and exploring Rocky Point a bit more on your next visit.
